Technical & Price Action

Breakout Stocks

Breakout Stocks is a Technical & Price Action screen. It checks every NSE-listed stock against 3 conditions computed from nightly data, after excluding heavily pledged promoters and very small market caps. This page explains the rule, each figure and its source. It lists no stocks and is not advice.

What it does and why

A breakout occurs when a stock that has been consolidating in a narrow range finally pushes through its resistance level with above-average volume. Breakout stocks are near their 52-week high and well above their 52-week low, indicating they have already made a significant move and are now attempting to extend it. The combination of price proximity to the high and strong volume signals that buyers are in control and sellers have been absorbed. This is a momentum and supply-demand screen, not a value or quality screen.

The rule, step by step

A stock must satisfy every condition below. Conditions are grouped under the pillar they test.

Breakout Setup

  • Close Price > 252-Day High (ex-today)

Liquidity

  • 20-Day Average Volume > 0
  • Daily Volume ÷ 20-Day Average Volume ≥ 1.5

Hard excludes

  • Promoter pledge above 30% of the promoter's holding
  • Market cap below ₹500 crore
Passes the screen

Ranked by Daily Volume ÷ 20-Day Average Volume, highest first.

What each figure means

Distance from 52-Week High (%)

How far the current price is below the 52-week high. A breakout stock is within 10% of its annual peak.

Low is better

Price vs 52-Week Low (%)

How far the current price is above the 52-week low. Confirms the stock has made a meaningful prior move.

High is better

Average Daily Volume (shares)

Average daily shares traded. Required above 100,000 to ensure the stock can be entered and exited without significant impact.

High is better

Stock Price (₹)

Current market price per share. Minimum ₹10 required.

Evidence

What the harness measured

No edge detected

We could not tell this screen's picks apart from the stocks it left out. That is an absence of evidence, not a finding that the screen is wrong; it is still a valid way to narrow a list by your own rules.

AI-generated plain-language explanation

Each month across 64 months of data we measured whether the stocks this screen picked did better over the following month (21 trading days) than the stocks it did not pick. We score that from -1 (the picks always did worse) to +1 (always did better); 0 means no pattern. This screen scored -0.0044. As a measurement, the score is essentially zero. If the screen had no real edge, a score at least this far from zero would show up about 39 in 100 by luck alone. That does not mean the screen is wrong; it still works for narrowing a list of stocks by your own rules. This is a record of the past, not a prediction.

Questions

How is this screen calculated?
Each stock is tested against 3 conditions using figures computed from exchange prices and company filings, adjusted for corporate actions. The rule is versioned; this page shows version 1.0.0.
How often does the screen update?
The figures are recomputed once each trading day after the nightly compute. A stock whose figures are more than three days old is left out rather than shown stale.
Is this investment advice?
No. This is educational material describing a screening method. It does not recommend any security and does not consider your circumstances.
