CANSLIM & Growth

CANSLIM C + Piotroski Combined

CANSLIM C + Piotroski Combined is a CANSLIM & Growth screen. It checks every NSE-listed stock against 2 conditions computed from nightly data, after excluding heavily pledged promoters and very small market caps. This page explains the rule, each figure and its source. It lists no stocks and is not advice.

What it does and why

A strong quarterly earnings result gets attention, but earnings acceleration alone does not distinguish a genuinely improving business from one that gamed a low base or benefited from a one-time item. The Piotroski F-Score provides the balance sheet and cash flow discipline check that the CANSLIM C criterion ignores: profitability, leverage trajectory, liquidity, and operational efficiency are all embedded in the nine binary criteria. Combining CANSLIM C (latest quarter EPS YoY growth above 25%) with a Piotroski score above 5.5 creates a screen where earnings momentum is filtered by financial quality. Neither the standalone quarterly_growers screen nor the standalone piotroski screen captures this intersection — the combination is the signal.

The rule, step by step

A stock must satisfy every condition below. Conditions are grouped under the pillar they test.

Financial Health (Piotroski F-Score)

  • Piotroski F-Score ≥ 6

Hard excludes

  • Promoter pledge above 30% of the promoter's holding
  • Market cap below ₹500 crore

What each figure means

Latest Quarter EPS YoY Growth (%)

Percentage change in EPS from the same quarter in the prior year to the most recent reported quarter. EPS computed as continuing operations PAT divided by paid-up equity shares: eps_continuing = (profitLossForPeriod - profitLossFromDiscontinuedOperationsAfterTax) / paidUpEquityShares. paidUpEquityShares sourced from FinEdge shareholdings/summary endpoint matched by quarter. Screen threshold: above 25%.

High is better

Piotroski F-Score

Sum of 9 binary (0/1) criteria across three domains: profitability (ROA positive, CFO positive, ROA improving, accruals low), leverage/liquidity (leverage declining, current ratio improving, no dilution), and operating efficiency (gross margin improving, asset turnover improving). Maximum score: 9. Screen threshold: above 5.5 (i.e., score of 6 or higher).

How often does the screen update?
The figures are recomputed once each trading day after the nightly compute. A stock whose figures are more than three days old is left out rather than shown stale.
