Loss to Profit Companies

Loss to Profit Companies is a Other Screens screen. It checks every NSE-listed stock against 1 condition computed from nightly data, after excluding heavily pledged promoters and very small market caps. This page explains the rule, each figure and its source. It lists no stocks and is not advice.

What it does and why

Turnaround companies — businesses that were making losses and have moved to profitability — often offer the most dramatic re-ratings in the market. A company that was loss-making trades at a depressed valuation (or none at all, since PE is undefined for a loss-maker). When it crosses into profitability, two things happen simultaneously: the business is genuinely improving, and the valuation expands sharply because a PE ratio suddenly becomes applicable. This screener finds companies that have achieved that crossing in the most recent quarter. The risk is that the turnaround is fragile — one bad quarter can reverse it.

The rule, step by step

What each figure means

Current Quarter PAT (₹ Cr)

Profit After Tax for the most recent quarter, in crores. A positive value confirms the company is currently profitable.

High is better

Prior Quarter PAT (₹ Cr)

Profit After Tax for the quarter immediately before the current one, in crores. Must be negative for this screener to classify the company as a turnaround.

The prior quarter must show a loss. If the prior quarter was already profitable, this is a sequential improvement screen, not a turnaround screen.

Low is better

PAT Margin (%)

Profit After Tax divided by revenue, expressed as a percentage. Measures how much of every rupee of revenue converts into net profit.

High is better

Questions

How is this screen calculated?
Each stock is tested against 1 condition using figures computed from exchange prices and company filings, adjusted for corporate actions. The rule is versioned; this page shows version 1.0.0.
How often does the screen update?
The figures are recomputed once each trading day after the nightly compute. A stock whose figures are more than three days old is left out rather than shown stale.
Is this investment advice?
No. This is educational material describing a screening method. It does not recommend any security and does not consider your circumstances.
