Ownership, FII & Promoter Activity

FII and DII Both Selling

FII and DII Both Selling is a Ownership, FII & Promoter Activity screen. It checks every NSE-listed stock against 1 condition computed from nightly data, after excluding heavily pledged promoters and very small market caps. This page explains the rule, each figure and its source. It lists no stocks and is not advice.

What it does and why

When both Foreign Institutional Investors (FII) and Domestic Institutional Investors (DII) are simultaneously reducing their holdings over consecutive quarters, it signals broad-based institutional disengagement from the stock. Unlike single-category selling, which can reflect portfolio rebalancing within one class of institutions, concurrent exit by both foreign and domestic institutions suggests a more fundamental concern about the stock's near-term prospects. This screen is the inverse of the fii_dii_both_buying signal and is most useful as a negative filter or watchlist for institutional overhang. Institutional selling for reasons of redemption or portfolio mandates does not necessarily imply fundamental deterioration, so this screen should be interpreted alongside business quality metrics before drawing conclusions.

What each figure means

FII Holding % (Latest Quarter)

FII shareholding as a percentage of total paid-up equity shares in the most recently reported quarter, sourced from the FinEdge shareholding pattern endpoint.

Low is better

FII Holding QoQ Change (%pts)

Quarter-over-quarter change in FII shareholding percentage, computed as fii_pct_latest minus fii_pct_prior_quarter, expressed in percentage points.

A negative value confirms FIIs are reducing their stake this quarter. The screen requires this to be negative for two consecutive quarters to filter out one-off quarterly fluctuations. Larger negative values indicate more aggressive institutional selling.

Low is better

DII Holding % (Latest Quarter)

DII shareholding as a percentage of total paid-up equity shares in the most recently reported quarter, covering domestic mutual funds, insurance companies, and pension funds.

Low is better

DII Holding QoQ Change (%pts)

Quarter-over-quarter change in DII shareholding percentage, computed as dii_pct_latest minus dii_pct_prior_quarter, expressed in percentage points.

A negative value confirms DIIs are reducing their stake this quarter. When both fii_pct_qoq_change and dii_pct_qoq_change are negative for two consecutive quarters, the combined institutional exit signal is active. This is the key qualifier condition for this screener.

Low is better
